Process

I applied to Uber ATG (their self-driving car division) and started out pretty positive on them, despite Uber's reputation in the news.

Like most employers, they weren't initially sure where to place me. We did some screening calls and eventually found a really good background/team fit, then did a standard panel interview loop for the final round, which included lunch (somewhat underwhelming by Bay standards).

The interviews were more challenging than average and went pretty deep on data structures and algorithms. They did involve practical engineering challenges rather than toy problems, which I appreciated.

They made an offer about a week following that interview. Their offer was good: the equity component was substantial (if you believe Uber's $60b valuation is justified, anyway), though the cash component was weaker than most companies offer at this level.

Most of the interviewers (who would have been my reports) had a smugness about them that I didn't like, and though I've had to manage and onboard people in that setting before, it was never a fun process.

They were also very high pressure on the offer and start date, calling me multiple times a day when I was trying to make a decision and trying to push my relocation down into a two-week timeframe (the relocation bonus was also inferior, with a two-year repayment clause and only usable with their vendor, so they were basically asking me to bear all the risk of their aggressive timeline).

There was no way the timeline they wanted was going to work for me, and I really wasn't digging the pressure, so I turned the offer down.
