Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Jose, California

Process

I applied online and received a phone call from a recruiter to schedule a technical screen phone interview.

It was a one-hour technical phone interview, and I requested to code using the HackerRank CodePair tool. The interviewer was polite but interrupted me while I was coding. I asked to compile my program, and it worked for all the inputs provided to verify the output.

I wrote a recursive solution that compiled and worked for all his inputs. However, in the last 10 minutes, he asked me to write a dynamic programming version of the code. I disliked this request, and instead, I explained the approach due to the time constraint.

Two days later, I received an email stating they were not moving forward with my application.

I felt I performed well. Within 45 minutes, I wrote correct code that produced the correct output for all inputs. However, I could not finish the dynamic programming version of the code, which he wanted to see written and compiled in the last 10 minutes.

Questions

Given an array of integers, find the maximum sum of non-adjacent elements.

For example: If arr = [1, 0, 3, 9, 2], then the answer would be 10, which is 1 + 9 (non-adjacent elements).
