Pros: The work can be challenging. The pay is good.

Cons: Very nepotistic culture. It used to be about building the technology, but now everything is so political. So many hidden decisions and conversations. The project you're currently working on is probably already canned, but you won't be informed until we're about to make the knowledge public. I've been spending ~80% of my time the past few months just writing documents. There are no opportunities for me to create anything anymore.

Pros: Great front-line teams. Some of the best engineers I have worked with, and a very collaborative environment in many organizations.

Cons: Leadership changes so frequently that no new initiatives can ever take hold. Usually, leadership does not take the time to understand the technology, just makes sweeping changes. As a result, innovation has been all but eliminated. Outside of ATG, Uber has completely divested from all research and development. CV and ML have virtually no place at Uber anymore. Upper management is very political. If you do not know someone, it is difficult for your project to succeed. Additionally, in my 5 years, 19 out of 20 senior roles at L6 and above were brought in and not promoted. They have made it virtually impossible to get promoted out of the senior band at Uber, preferring to only hire friends and coworkers from previous companies to fill those roles.

Pros: Compensation, learning rate, smart active people.

Cons: Stress, pager duty, and the potential for an unhealthy life balance.
