Good company to have on your resume. Highly political and demanding environment

Pros
  • Good pay (especially the shift pay for engineers and contractors).
  • Flexible working hours. No issues at all to work from home or to leave early.
  • Nice offices in San Francisco.
  • Good opportunity to learn and develop skills. Plenty of tools and technologies to play with.
Cons
  • 100% time tracking. You have to record every single minute of your day. This includes your toilet visits. It's really, really that bad.

  • Very political due to a handful of managers. Promotions and opportunities are defined by personal relationships, not competence. This is very sad, as some people are excellent but are purposely held back and will never progress in the company.

  • Constant cost savings. The company saves money by not buying paper towels and hand soap. Makes you wonder if you really work for a billion-dollar company.

Advice to Management

Get rid of some of the deadwood and negative old-school mid-managers who are responsible for the ROC and the GSD.

Plenty of talent and business opportunities are wasted due to an implemented management and service delivery theory that doesn't work. 100% time-tracking and the aggressive outsourcing to Chennai would never have happened if the ROC had been led by different people.

Introduce an employee reward program.

Verizon, as a company, can afford paper towels and hand wipes. Buy these again.
