Pros

It's extremely difficult to be fired in an environment that rewards mediocrity. Salaried employees are paid for approved overtime, and the healthcare benefits are excellent.

Cons

Verizon epitomizes the classic model of survival through acquisition. The company sees conformity to obsolete and broken business patterns as a virtue, has no interest in innovation, and refuses to invest in increasing its capabilities. The more ineffectual a manager is, the greater their job security and promotion prospects. Mediocrity begets mediocrity, and Verizon is in a mad dash for the middle. There also seems to be a pervasive attitude among management that requiring employees to work for "extra credit", rather than being paid for overtime, isn't an egregious breach of ethics and law. Your salary is capped by your title, so if you aren't being promoted on a regular basis, you'll quickly hit a hard cap on salary and never get another raise for merit or cost-of-living.

Advice to Management

Realize that aping what all your half-wit competitors do isn't good business. Invest in skilled resources with demonstrated merit, and axe the endless legions of pass-through, rubber stamp managers.
