Cons

Efforts are not recognized due to a lack of goals and/or irrelevant goals.

For example, operation staff (firefighters) are given Developer KPIs like Lines-of-Code committed, number of commits, and number of story points.

Level-to-level goals are also not well defined. For example, Level 3 engineers are given goals of Level 4-6 engineers to achieve. Typically, achieving these goals will take an engineer from Level 4 to Level 5, or 5 to 6. Instead, these same goals are being pushed to L3 engineers to climb to L4.

With the introduction of AI, goals shifted to "Number of commits that uses AI tools" instead of actually measuring productivity.

Vibe-coding is becoming a necessity to score brownie points with management.

Advice to Management

Take some time to think about all the investments into AI tools and how to validate their productivity.
