Pros

Virtually endless opportunities are available at Walmart. If you feel yourself getting bored or stagnate, talk to your supervisor or look at the internal job postings for the opportunity you would enjoy or the next step in your career.

Cons

Walmart has good and bad managers.

My suggestion when looking for a new position or an internal transfer: ask questions in the interview(s) to ensure the position is a good fit for you.

Remember that interviews are not only for the company/hiring manager to determine if they want you on their team; interviews are also to help you determine if you want to work for that company and manager.

Walmart does have a rich history of culture. It has seemed that they are losing the culture over the last few years, most likely due to all the acquisitions and management turnover.

I think the biggest loss they are experiencing is a core principle Sam Walton had.

He did NOT want to be the biggest retailer; he wanted to be the BEST retailer. He wanted to do this by:

  • Selling quality merchandise at a great price.
  • Taking care of the store associates, so they would naturally take great care of the Walmart customers.
Advice to Management

Make it a personal commitment to help each person under you to grow professionally and personally. Get to know the people that work for you besides their name. What do they like and dislike, and do they have a plan for their career, retirement, and family? By doing this, they will be more excited to come to work, and they will do the best they can.
