A very diverse workforce, from mid-level employees and down. A great place to vest, hide, and be average.
I work in Technology; it is led by leaders that talk about innovation and have done very little to foster an environment of innovation. Risk is not rewarded, failure is punished, and there is no concept of "fail fast."
The company has talked about innovative technology like public cloud but has not delivered on it in eight years of talking, while the competition is delivering new and innovative products.
Internal platform teams tasked with delivering innovation do not have a relationship with the developer community. There are no developers or development experience on these teams. These teams are led by old-time managers who are able to be mediocre and protect their teams. They are not held accountable for delivering innovation and on the promise of the platform.
It is important that the enterprise operates in a secure manner; however, security policies prevent developers from doing their job, let alone innovating. Simple things, like allowing developers not to create tables in databases, etc., are not possible. Security policies do not understand or care about the development process. It forces developers to find ways around them, putting developers at risk for punitive actions for doing their job.
It has been my experience that the managers who are supposed to evaluate performance are not allowed to evaluate their employees. It is directors that evaluate employees, driven by personal relationships and a ranking system that is forcing out productive employees and rewarding those with personal relationships with the directors.
Collaboration is not embraced, promoted, nor fostered. Great employees are forced to tolerate a toxic workplace that promotes mediocrity and look for opportunities with companies that have a workplace that is in the 21st century.
