It's no secret that IT is facing a difficult time right now. I was laid off a few months ago, so I've been looking intensively for a job and have been through many interviews. Some were good, but others were not so good. However, my experience with Workday certainly stands out. I decided to share it with my "brothers in arms."
Well, I didn't move past the initial conversation with the hiring manager, but there's a solid reason for it. Most of the time during our one-hour interview, he was openly playing with his iPhone, texting someone, and even smiling at his messages. Once in a while, he lifted his head, looked at me with innocent, blurry eyes, and asked, "Sorry, what did you say?" He then immediately returned to his texting session.
Now, I'm not trying to say I was a perfect fit for this position. I just question how they could determine I wasn't an ideal fit without giving me a chance. So much for a company that proclaims empathy and equal opportunity in every communication. Ultimately, it's just the regular corporate indifference we've all become accustomed to.
They asked me, "Sorry, what did you say?"
