Process

Skype interview with a hiring manager. This ended up being a phone interview, as they couldn't contact me using Skype for some reason. I'm unsure why, as I had a Skype interview with another company the very same week without any issues.

The conversation focused mainly on their teams, their work, the processes they follow, and their tech stack. There were no specific technical questions about Java or Scala.

Coding test: A programming assignment with a one-week deadline. The emphasis was on the quality of the solution rather than speed. Candidates had the choice of Java or Scala, with Scala being preferable.

Face-to-face interviews: Three hours in duration with two managers, a team leader, and two developers. No whiteboard was used during the technical interview.

I didn't get to see their offices. The interviews were held in one of the meeting rooms in the lobby. I found this a bit suspicious, as I'd experienced a similar situation with another company where the offices turned out to be awful. However, that didn't seem to be the case here, as the lobby looked very nice, though it did concern me slightly.

I was upfront about looking for a company with strong software development processes. From my conversations with some of the managers, I felt their processes were not very strong. Two of them, in leadership roles, spent time justifying a lack of certain processes and low code quality during the face-to-face interviews.

They could have been more honest during the Skype/phone interview, which would have saved me time. I had a better impression of them during that initial call. I enjoyed the coding test, although I've completed more challenging ones in the past.

When I mention things about clean code, people often perceive it as bravado until I show my work. Perhaps they weren't expecting me to perform so well on the coding assignment, and for the process to end there. However, I am a clean coder; my work is high quality, and I received good feedback ('they were very impressed').

Considering the entire process took over a month, despite having only three steps, I felt they weren't very serious about it. One of the individuals involved in the interviewing process went on holiday mid-process. Ultimately, they conducted a call from their home to the meeting room (not a true face-to-face).

I received no feedback in the end, even though they promised it within three days after the face-to-face, looking me in the eye. All I got was notification that they were progressing with another candidate three weeks later, and only after I sent an email. I was extremely polite throughout, and given the time and effort I invested, I deserved better treatment.

Questions

Mostly pre-Java 5 threads questions, using primitives such as synchronized, wait, volatile, and notify. There were no questions about the Concurrency API or Java 8 new features. No Scala questions were included either. No whiteboard problems were presented.

I wish I could remember more details, but it's been three weeks.
