Pros
  1. The product is really good and stable.
  2. The hiring process is intense, so most of the new hires are actually talented.
  3. The work culture in general is good (changing now, though - see cons).
  4. If managed well, there is a great potential in this company.
Cons

The company is hiring a lot to meet the declarations it had made about overall growth (especially in Europe). This is not sustainable and is detrimental because of the following:

  1. Although we boast that we prefer to nurture internal talent, for the last year, most managers have been hired from outside. This has not gone well with many of the star employees who have been with the company for at least a year and have worked day and night to make projects successful. No one works hard for free, and good employees deserve to be promoted!

  2. Attrition has increased in recent months due to professional dissatisfaction among employees. Another reason for attrition is that most programmers at Workday work on a proprietary technology called Xpresso. Many feel they get pigeonholed and won't find another job in Java or their previous field. An Xpresso developer can work only for Workday.

  3. The 'Workday' culture is fading. This is logical because most managers are hired from outside, do not know the Workday culture, and try to implement their own ways to run their teams.

  4. The management has created an impression that it is one of the best places to work and that the company is very employee-centric. To be honest, most successful companies are so; unnecessary bragging is meaningless! When someone joins Workday, their mind is sort of brainwashed into believing it is the best thing that could happen to their professional career. This is just a gimmick, and most people start working crazy hours believing it. It is not clear whose fault this is, though.

  5. If you are good at job A and have proven your mettle in it, but you are more interested in doing job B, they will find a hundred reasons not to move you to job B. I have seen a case where an excellent resource decided to quit his job because he was not moved to a different role he wanted (he had prior relevant experience for that job), and instead, someone with less relevant experience was hired from outside. The fun part is that he was told at the time of the interview to join in his current role and that he would later be moved to the role he desired, as there was no opening back then.

PS: I am not a victim (yet) of any of these cons. It is just my perspective on things that I have seen here.

Advice to Management

Grow internal talent. That's how all good companies have flourished.

Give opportunities to people who have proved themselves instead of stalling their careers.

I am not saying hiring a manager from the outside world should be forbidden, but there should be a good balance, which is lacking, and lacking big time.

Strange that I can see all this, but not the management!
