Pros

In general, the work environment is very pleasant. We work in nice, modern offices with nice accommodations and available space for taking walks and breaks. There is free food and/or drink (depending on the location). You'll find a break-room with ping-pong and foosball tables in every building, and these are used daily. Developers choose if they want to work on PCs or Macs. Most server apps are Linux-based. Developers have a variety of "Y-tools" that were created here for setting up environments, installing packages, creating new packages, etc. In some cases, these tools are pretty cutting-edge and really help developers be very productive. In other cases, these tools were cutting-edge six years ago, but there are better tools out there today. Thus, it can be frustrating to know there's a better way out there. I know the tools group is looking at modernization of tools -- it's never-ending. Generally speaking, everything around you is bright, pleasant, clean, not rushed, and not stuffy. Everyone dresses casually. One guy who sits near me wears what I'd call PJs and flip-flops to work every day. Some people roll into work late, some show up early. Some are there on weekends. Many use the very modern gym facility to work out. There are occasional parties or group events here and there. I'd say people work and play -- people are generally very friendly and are there to have fun and do great work too.

Cons

The company is not perfect (oh well), but it's great.

I love coming to work every day. My day provides me with challenges, and I get to make a difference in terms of what we do.

I admire many of the people I get to work with; they are stellar.

There is uncertainty ahead. Ok, that's life; we don't have certainty. But we have opportunity. Now is a great time to be part of what could be a great turnaround story.

Those people who are into a challenge and want to rebuild a giant would enjoy it a lot.

We need some great talent, so if you are great talent, you will be very well received and will have a lot of opportunity for greatness. Probably more so than in other companies where you'd have to stick around for a long time before getting your moment.

Those who only want to work at companies that are never criticized by bloggers, well, I'm not sure where you'd find a job.

So, in all honesty, I'm sure the experience ranges quite a bit from yucky to wonderful. Where I sit, people are really rocking.

I meet amazing tech-folks from our offices in:

  • Bangalore
  • Beijing
  • Barcelona
  • Haifa
  • Amman
  • Burbank
  • New York

They are professional, smart, and are fun to work with. Developers here are working on interesting projects, stuff is getting done, and we have many exciting days ahead.

It's really worth taking a serious look at.
