Process

I was referred by an existing employee. After waiting for weeks for them to contact me, they sent me a coding challenge. The challenge was an easy, 45-minute exercise on HackerRank, oriented to a problem you might find daily at Yelp.

After completing the challenge, my contact told me that the recruiter said I didn't do it, which should have been a red flag. After some back and forth, they found my submission.

Following that, I had a 20-30 minute background interview with the recruiter to discuss the position. Then, I had a 45-minute behavioral interview (phone) with one of their engineers, which included standard behavioral questions.

Lastly, I had a 4-round onsite interview during an entire morning, in a 4-hour span:

  • 1 system design
  • 2 live coding
  • 1 behavioral

The system design and behavioral interviewers were really nice and overall great. The two live coding interviewers were really bad.

  • Their accent was very hard to understand, to the point I needed to ask them to repeat themselves multiple times.
  • They provided very poor explanations of the problems.

The main issue was with the second live coding interviewer. From the start, I noticed zero engagement from his end; clearly, he didn't care. He didn't care enough to share his camera, even though everyone else did during the rest of the interviews. He also didn't care to properly explain the problem.

Even though, overall, I did well, they kept me waiting for feedback for six weeks (the recruiter said it takes up to two weeks for the decision). During that time, I received weekly emails for the first 3-4 weeks from the recruiter stating, "they were waiting for feedback."

In the end, I received a generic email from the recruiter saying that the position was closed and they were no longer hiring.

All the interviews were easy, but the experience was extremely poor.
