Process

In general, the interview process was good. Perhaps the only drawback is that there are quite a few steps spread out over time. I'm used to having a phone screen and then one longer onsite interview.

I wasn't in a rush to find a job, so the timing wasn't critical until the end when I was deciding on offers.

While they are evaluating whether you have the skills to do your job, there is a much bigger focus on whether you would do well in the Zapier culture. I found everyone I met throughout the interview process to be introspective and empathetic. For me, that was a big difference maker--I found myself having genuinely good conversations with everyone I talked to.

The detailed process for me was:

  • 30-minute screening call with the recruiter. There were a few questions to gauge interest as well as a couple of soft skills type questions.
  • 30-minute screening call with an engineering manager. This call had more high-level technical questions along with more soft skills questions.
  • Do on your own code test. The test was timeboxed, which I liked. It struck a nice balance between the high-pressure, whiteboard-type problems and poorly scoped take-home projects.
  • After completing the take-home test, there was an hour-long follow-up with an engineer and a different engineering manager to go over the test. Again, I appreciated that the take-home test was timeboxed, because it made it easier to talk about the limits of my solution and what I would have done differently with more time.
  • 45-minute call with the VP of engineering. This call also focused more on soft skills. I was given a lot of time to ask questions as well (he stayed on about 15 minutes past the scheduled end time), which I really appreciated.
  • Call with two other folks from non-engineering parts of the org. This was 100% soft skills focused.
  • After that, I believe I had an offer within a couple of days. Maybe faster.
