Lengthy (7 stages) but well-presented and friendly interview process. Zapier is extremely communicative every step of the way.
Candidates are well-supported by the recruiters, and I really think the company overall has a really well-thought-out, if difficult, interview process.
Every stage of the interview is recorded with BrightHire, but you can opt out of this if you choose. I thought it was helpful because the interviewers were free to be engaged in the interview.
First round was with a recruiter. She asked me basic questions about my experience and why I was looking for a new role. The recruiter was very nice and answered my questions as best she could.
Second round was with a hiring manager. He asked some behavioral questions around day-to-day work and conflict resolution. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Third round was a System Design interview. This is unusual for a mid-level position, but so be it. They told me multiple times 'there is no wrong answer' and it is 'an open-ended discussion', but I was ultimately rejected after this round with extremely pointed and specific feedback for my in-interview system design was not what they were looking for. The feedback was helpful and it is far better than what most companies offer.
Zapier offers all candidates a 15-minute post-rejection debrief where they give as much feedback as they can, which I took. It was here that I found out that Zapier really looks for seniority even in positions that are not explicitly in 'senior' in title or pay band, and that they make all engineering candidates clear system design interviews regardless of expected seniority. This should be something to keep in mind if you want to interview here.
Overall, I think Zapier is a great place to interview if you have FAANG interview chops but don't want to work at FAANG.
