Job Description

Amazon's Operations division is seeking an Automation Engineer to optimize their automated systems across multiple sites in North West England and Ireland. This role is crucial for maintaining and improving Amazon's sophisticated material handling and automation infrastructure. The position combines hands-on technical work with strategic problem-solving, requiring expertise in PLC systems, automation controls, and industrial electronics.

As part of the Reliability Maintenance Engineering (RME) team, you'll be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance of automated systems including conveyors and sortation equipment. The role involves both reactive troubleshooting and proactive maintenance planning, working with cutting-edge technology including Amazon Robotics and Complex Item Sorter systems.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills in industrial automation, including experience with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and various industrial communication protocols. You'll need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with global teams, and occasionally working during off-hours to minimize operational disruption.

Responsibilities For Automation Engineer

  • Monitor, troubleshoot and repair issues with key systems
  • Work with the EU Controls network to monitor Material Handling Equipment (MHE) metrics
  • Provide data visualizations of troubleshooting to internal stakeholders
  • Own or actively participate in continuous improvement projects
  • Work with different departments to ensure systems documentation
  • Work with global colleagues to install and commission new equipment
  • Support other sites in the EU Controls network as needed
  • Interpret mechanical and electrical drawings

Requirements For Automation Engineer

  • Experience with PLC-controlled automation and issue diagnosis
  • Experience supporting conveyors and sortation systems
  • Experience with material handling, flow and capacity visualization
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, project management tools and EPLAN
  • Knowledge of Ladder Logic and structure programming
  • Experience with Ignition SCADA or similar platform
  • Advanced proficiency in verbal and written English
  • Experience with EthernetIP, Profinet, Profibus
