Job Description

Dematic, a member of the KION Group, is seeking a Controls Engineer to join their team in Shah Alam, Malaysia. This role represents an exciting opportunity to work with a global leader in intelligent intralogistics solutions, specializing in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of automated systems for production environments and distribution centers.

The position combines electrical engineering expertise with software development, focusing on PLC programming, system integration, and automation control systems. As a Controls Engineer, you'll be responsible for the full lifecycle of control systems - from initial specification and design through to implementation, testing, and customer handover.

Your daily responsibilities will span technical design work, including developing PLC programs and creating electrical schematics, while also managing practical aspects like budget control and installation supervision. You'll work directly with clients and cross-functional teams, requiring both technical expertise and strong communication skills.

The ideal candidate should possess a degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics, with hands-on experience in PLC programming (particularly with TIA Portal, Ladder, SCL, STL), electrical system design using tools like EPLAN or AutoCAD, and knowledge of industrial automation protocols and safety systems. Experience with materials handling systems and their integration with third-party equipment is crucial.

Responsibilities For Controls Engineer

  • Prepare/assist with development of functional specifications
  • Prepare/assist with budget costing
  • Liaise with clients and Dematic personnel
  • Ensure conformance to OHS&E standards in design and execution
  • Prepare schematic drawings, PLC programs and configure operator interfaces
  • Prepare manufacturing and installation specifications
  • Plan and supervise major controls installations
  • Manage procurement of parts, manufacture of cabinets and electrical installation
  • Controls project cost control
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Prepare test plans and operator & technical manuals
  • Train client personnel
  • Provide customer support
  • Hand over to Customer service

Requirements For Controls Engineer

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering/Mechatronics
  • Experience in electrical drawings design (EPLAN, EEC One, AutoCAD)
  • Experience in electrical installation supervision
  • Experience in system design (power calculation, circuit protection design, safety control circuit)
  • Experience interfacing materials handling systems with third party equipment
  • Experience in PLC software development and office testing (TIA Portal, Ladder, SCL, STL)
  • Experience in development of testing environments and conducting FATs
  • Experience in management of installation crews
  • Knowledge of configuration, programming and commissioning of PLCs, variable speed drives and safety devices
  • Knowledge of materials handling system controls (WCS and PLC integration)
  • Technical documentation writing skills
