Research Engineer, Foundational Research

Google DeepMind is seeking a Research Engineer to join their new Research Engineering team in NYC, focusing on accelerating foundational research around large language models, reinforcement learning, and new capabilities for AI agents. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of artificial intelligence, collaborating with the Gemini team, research teams, and global Research Engineering teams.

As a Research Engineer, you'll be directly involved in a wide range of research projects, working alongside Research Scientists and Software Engineers. Your responsibilities will include scaling up algorithms, overcoming technical obstacles, and designing, running, and analyzing experiments. You'll apply your engineering and research skills to accelerate research progress through developing prototypes and tackling large-scale engineering challenges.

The ideal candidate should have a strong technical background, preferably with a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as machine learning, AI, computer science, mathematics, physics, or statistics. Proficiency in programming, especially in Python or C++, is essential. You should also have a solid understanding of mathematics, statistics, and machine learning concepts necessary to comprehend and contribute to research in the field.

Key responsibilities include working with large-scale compute for research methods, performance engineering, solving research challenges through experimentation and analysis, and designing and improving research infrastructure. You'll also be expected to share your skills and knowledge with other engineers and researchers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.

Google DeepMind offers a competitive salary range of $136,000 - $300,000, plus bonus, equity, and benefits. They also provide relocation and immigration support for eligible candidates.
