Job Description
Google's Operations Data Science (ODS) team is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to lead data modeling and estimation efforts for their Google Cloud Carbon Footprint product. This role is part of the Google Climate Operations team, which is committed to achieving 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy and Zero emissions for global operations by 2030.
The position requires expertise in data science, analytics, and environmental impact assessment. You'll work on enhancing the Google Cloud Carbon Footprint by accurately estimating energy consumption and carbon emissions of customer workloads. The role involves collaborating with internal teams to gather and analyze data related to Cloud software usage, resource consumption, and environmental impact.
Key responsibilities include developing sophisticated models for energy use estimation, working with cross-functional teams to identify carbon-reduction opportunities, and building problem-solving tools for customers. You'll need strong analytical skills, programming expertise in Python/SQL, and experience with statistical modeling.
The role offers competitive compensation ($166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits) and the opportunity to work at Google's offices in major tech hubs (San Francisco, New York, or Sunnyvale). Responsibilities For Senior Data Scientist, Research, Operations Data Science
- Collaborate with stakeholders in cross-projects and team settings to identify and clarify business or product questions to answer
- Gather information, business goals, priorities, and organizational context around the questions to answer
- Own the process of gathering, extracting, and compiling data across sources via relevant tools
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to combine hardware insights with energy and emissions data to prioritize carbon-reduction efforts in Cloud
- Develop, maintain, support, and enhance models and estimation tools for the energy-use and carbon-footprint of Google Cloud customer workloads
Requirements For Senior Data Scientist, Research, Operations Data Science
- Master's degree in Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Operations Research, Engineering, a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5 years of work experience using analytics to solve product or business problems, coding (e.g., Python, R, SQL), querying databases or statistical analysis, or 3 years of work experience with a PhD degree
- Experience in designing and building optimization, simulation, and probabilistic decision-making models
- Experience in designing and building statistical models or physical models for energy consumption
- Experience in the computer hardware industry
