Job Description

Mercari, founded in 2013, is seeking a Mid-Level Software Engineer to join their US Web Team in Tokyo, Japan. The company's mission is to "Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people" through their marketplace platform.

The US Web Team is responsible for building and maintaining the frontend experience for Mercari.com, including their GraphQL Backend For Frontend service, design system, and E2E testing suite. This is a hybrid position based in their Roppongi office with flexible working hours.

As a Software Engineer, you'll be working on a high-traffic e-commerce platform serving tens of millions of active users. The role involves writing clean, maintainable code using modern technologies like TypeScript, React.js, Next.js, and GraphQL. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver features while maintaining platform excellence through continuous improvements.

Key challenges include balancing rapid feature delivery with code quality, optimizing web performance, and shaping the future of Mercari's design system and frontend architecture. The position requires 3+ years of relevant experience and business-level English proficiency, with basic Japanese being a plus.

  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience working with cross-functional and cross-geo teams
  • Business level English (CEFR B2 or higher)
