Microsoft's Azure Fiber team is seeking a Principal Cloud Network Engineer to lead the strategic expansion and operational excellence of their global optical network infrastructure. This role is critical in supporting Microsoft's mission to empower every person and organization through Azure's physical platform.

The position focuses on managing and enhancing both solid core and hollow core fiber networks that enable seamless connectivity for services like Azure, Teams, Xbox, Office, Bing, and OpenAI's ChatGPT. You'll be at the forefront of the AI network revolution, combining infrastructure design with AI-based network management tools.

As a Principal Engineer, you'll lead the development and implementation of a global change management framework, integrate cutting-edge AI-based network management software, and ensure the highest quality dark fiber assets. The role requires deep expertise in optical network design, development, planning, operations, and automation.

The compensation is competitive, ranging from $137,600 to $267,000 per year (higher in SF Bay Area and NYC), plus comprehensive benefits including healthcare, educational resources, and parental leave. This is a remote-friendly position with 0-25% travel requirements.

Responsibilities For Principal Cloud Network Engineer, Azure Fiber

  • Monitor and maintain reliability and efficiency of solid core and hollow core fiber networks
  • Lead implementation of change management framework and oversee network changes
  • Integrate AI-based software tooling into operations frameworks
  • Act as Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guide other engineers
  • Work closely with senior engineers on projects to enhance customer satisfaction
  • Create and document process and automation improvements
  • Support integration of hollow core and solid core fiber technologies

Requirements For Principal Cloud Network Engineer, Azure Fiber

Linux
  • 9+ years technical experience in optical network design, development, planning, operations and automation with background in fiber networks
  • 8+ years of technical experience on optical system or subsystem design, validation, and testing utilizing coherent, direct-detection, and WDM technologies
  • Must pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter
