Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is seeking a Principal Design Engineer to join their innovative team focused on AI component development. This role sits at the intersection of hardware engineering and artificial intelligence, working on cutting-edge technology that powers Microsoft's extensive cloud infrastructure.

As a Principal Design Engineer, you'll be responsible for developing sophisticated digital logic designs and microarchitectural solutions for AI components. The role requires deep expertise in RTL design, verification principles, and system architecture, with a focus on delivering high-performance digital IP that meets rigorous quality standards.

Key technical areas include RTL coding in Verilog/System Verilog, synthesis and timing optimization, power/performance/area trade-offs, and post-silicon debug. The role requires strong leadership skills as you'll be mentoring team members and driving technical excellence across projects.

Responsibilities For Principal Design Engineer

  • Establish yourself as an integral member of a digital logic design team for the development of AI components with focus on micro-architectural based functions and features
  • Be responsible for the logic design/Register Transfer Level (RTL) entry, design quality including Lint, Clock Domain Crossing (CDC), Reset Domain Crossing (RDC), power etc.
  • Collaborate with the verification team to ensure the implementation meets both architectural and micro-architectural intent
  • Interface with physical design (PD), design for test (DFT), and other teams to optimize tradeoffs within the design
  • Provide technical leadership through mentorship and teamwork

Requirements For Principal Design Engineer

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Master's with 6+ years OR Bachelor's with 8+ years
  • 6+ years expertise in digital logic design including microarchitecture specification development, RTL coding in Verilog/System Verilog
  • 6+ years of experience in synthesis, timing constraints, power/performance/area (PPA) trade-offs and post-silicon debug
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Perl
  • Knowledge of verification principles, testbenches, UVM, and coverage
  • Working knowledge of writing assertions, coverage and formal verification
