onX is seeking a talented Senior Backend Engineer to join their Backcountry team, focusing on feature development for the onX Backcountry application. As a pioneer in digital outdoor navigation, onX was founded in Montana and has inspired their mission to awaken the adventurer inside everyone. With over 300 employees located around the country working in largely remote/hybrid roles, onX has created regional "Basecamps" to help remote employees find connection and inspiration with other onXers.
The ideal candidate will have at least 8 years of professional software development experience, with a minimum of 3 years focused on API development. You'll be responsible for building scalable services, writing tests, participating in architectural decisions, and collaborating with team members. The role requires experience with distributed, scalable microservices architecture and a strong foundation in computer science.

The compensation range for this position is $150,000 to $175,000, with additional benefits including equity options, annual bonuses, comprehensive health benefits, 401k matching, and various perks tailored to an active, outdoor lifestyle. This is a hybrid role, with options to work from onX corporate offices, "Basecamps," or "Connection Hubs" across the United States.

Responsibilities For Senior Backend Engineer - Backcountry
- Build scalable services to support new features and products for the onX suite of apps
- Write unit, integration, and acceptance tests
- Participate in architectural decisions involving our services
- Collaborate effectively with other team members and stakeholders
- Lead by example - embody our company values
- Leverage and extend existing onX services
- Participate in an on-call schedule to support backend services after work hours
Requirements For Senior Backend Engineer - Backcountry
- Minimum of eight (8) years of professional software development experience
- At least three (3) years of professional focus on API development
- Experience building and debugging distributed, scalable microservices architecture
- Well-versed in modern API and systems design and development
- Strong computer science foundation
- Advocate for the customer and their experience
- Desire to mentor junior engineers and be mentored by other senior engineers
- Ability to write great code and get stuff done
- Take ownership of work
