As a Controls Engineer at Redwood Materials, you'll play a crucial role in maintaining and optimizing advanced automation systems that support their battery recycling and materials manufacturing operations. The position requires expertise in industrial automation, particularly with Siemens PLCs, Ignition HMIs, SCADA, and vision systems. You'll be responsible for troubleshooting complex controls issues, implementing system upgrades, and ensuring reliable operations. The role combines hands-on technical work with collaborative projects alongside process engineering, facilities, and operations teams. The ideal candidate brings 5+ years of manufacturing automation experience, strong electrical troubleshooting skills, and a passion for sustainability. Working conditions include both office and manufacturing environments, with exposure to industrial conditions and participation in on-call rotation. Responsibilities For Controls Engineer

  • Maintain and improve existing automation systems by troubleshooting controls issues, updating documentation, refining panel designs, and implementing software and hardware upgrades
  • Drive uptime and efficiency by delivering expert maintenance and support for automation and electrical systems
  • Maintain and support plant control systems including Siemens PLCs, Ignition HMIs, SCADA, vision systems, and OT networking
  • Partner with process engineering, facilities, EHS, maintenance, and operations to design and implement large capital projects
  • Support risk assessments and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards

Requirements For Controls Engineer

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in an automated manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of process control design and feedback control strategies
  • Ability to read, interpret, and edit P&ID and Electrical Schematics
  • Exceptional electrical troubleshooting skills
  • Basic understanding of networking and fieldbus systems
  • Experience with Siemens PLCs and Ignition SCADA system
  • Experience with advanced control strategies (MPC and APC)
  • Familiarity with industry standards (ISA, IEC, and NFPA)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Genuine passion for sustainability
