Description For Mechanical Engineer, Machine Design (Starship)

As a member of the Starship Tooling team at SpaceX, you will work with a team of elite engineers across multiple disciplines to design, build, and activate critical production assets required to build the Starship launch vehicle. This position is based at our Starship production facility in Brownsville, Texas but may involve work on designs that are implemented across all of SpaceX's sites supporting the Starship program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing, building, and activating custom machinery and infrastructure for Starship production and handling
  • Developing the Starfactory of the future for rapid build, test, and operation of transport architectures
  • Collaborating with vehicle engineers to influence design and manufacturing processes
  • Executing structural sizing, mechanism design, hardware fabrication, and activation testing
  • Creating detailed models and engineering prints in NX
  • Performing engineering calculations and analysis
  • Creating manufacturing planning for internal welding and toolmaking teams
  • Supporting machine activation with controls engineering and production engineering teams

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in engineering, experience with CAD software, and at least 1 year of experience in mechanical structure design and analysis. Preferred skills include working in a fast-paced environment, collaborating in teams, experience in production facilities, finite element analysis, and strong understanding of GD&T.

Requirements For Mechanical Engineer, Machine Design (Starship)

Linux
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • Experience using CAD software (e.g. Solidworks, NX, CATIA, or ProE)
  • 1+ years of experience in mechanical structure design and analysis
  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
  • Willingness to travel to other SpaceX locations as necessary
