Description For Internship, Materials Engineer, Cell Engineering (Winter/Spring 2025)

Tesla is seeking a Materials Engineer intern for their Cell Engineering team, starting Winter/Spring 2025. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge battery technology development at one of the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturers. The internship spans multiple possible locations including Fremont, CA, Austin, TX, Hutto, TX, Robstown, TX, and Reno, NV.

The position involves working across various specialized teams including Cathode Engineering, Cell Modeling, Cell Materials Engineering, and Advanced Materials Research. Interns will contribute to critical projects in battery material development, testing, and optimization. The role requires full-time, on-site commitment for a minimum of 12 weeks.

This is an exceptional opportunity for students pursuing degrees in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Chemical Engineering to gain hands-on experience in Tesla's innovative battery development programs. You'll work directly with advanced technologies and contribute to Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy.

The ideal candidate will combine strong theoretical knowledge with practical skills in materials engineering, electrochemistry, and battery technologies. You'll have the chance to work with state-of-the-art equipment and contribute to real-world projects that impact Tesla's product development.

Responsibilities For Internship, Materials Engineer, Cell Engineering (Winter/Spring 2025)

  • Develop and scale up materials at lab scale
  • Work on precursor synthesis and raw material qualification
  • Participate in development and production of new cathode active materials
  • Develop and maintain numerical models for lithium-ion cell performance
  • Conduct lab work and data analysis for battery technologies
  • Support development efforts in pilot plants
  • Contribute to battery performance testing and electrochemical analysis
  • Aid in developing fundamental understandings of lithium battery electrodes
  • Focus on materials development, process conceptualization and scale-up

Requirements For Internship, Materials Engineer, Cell Engineering (Winter/Spring 2025)

Python
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Mechanically capable and willing to engage with equipment
  • Prior experiences in Cathode and Lithium-Ion batteries testing
  • Strong understanding of materials engineering fundamentals
  • Strong understanding in electrochemistry and materials development
  • Experience with synthetic techniques for lithium ion cells
  • Working knowledge of Matlab or Python
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery research/design/manufacturing/testing
  • Proficiency in materials characterization tools and analysis
