How can I avoid burning myself out?

I tend to give everything my all, which is what I did back in school. I overdid it back then, so I needed a long break afterwards. I want to make sure I don't make the same mistake with my career - What can I do to prevent burnout while still achieving lots of impact and growth?

Great question, and exactly the topic of a recent video I made.

In particular, as an entry-level engineer at a fairly large company (Capital One), I'd recommend you focus on defining an area where you are the master, but don't try to master too much. Be clear with your tech lead/manager on what the impactful work is, and focus on that.

for me, there's four things that combat burnout:

    1. health/sleep. no way around this. you'll feel burnt out even doing what you love if you don't give yourself some TLC regularly
    2. time management / work life balance. tips here: https://www.ladderly.io/blog/2025-04-18-time-management
    3. I can actually work more and not get burned out if I'm doing something I'm passionate about. So, explore/exploit passion projects after work OR find a way to work on project I genuinely care about at work (and perhaps switch roles)
    4. deliberate anxiety mitigation. if it's really bad then you could chat with a therapist. if it's mild then consider rest and some of the stuff mentioned in the following video, although it is more focused on the job search rather than on the job stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb8HXohYlRc
