How do you usually write a mid-year or end-of-year performance review? Are there any templates, formats, or resources that can help?

I'm currently writing my mid-year review, and this is my first time doing it. My manager hasn't provided any templates or guidance, so I'm not sure where to start. If anyone has resources, examples, or tips on how to structure it and what to include and what not to include, I’d really appreciate the help.

Can you get an example from a teammate who's gone through performance review before? If not, here's a super generic template (this is baked into most HR tools like Workday):

    1. The impact you landed this cycle
    2. What you did well
    3. What you could have done better

For each of the 3 sections, you would split things into bullet points for organization.

At bigger companies like FAANG, you'll have performance review axes that further sub-divide sections #2 and #3 from above. At Meta for example, these axes were:

    1. Impact
    2. Engineering Excellence
    3. People
    4. Direction

You can see what those axes mean with my mid-level to senior promotion course here: Grow From Mid-Level To Senior Engineer: L4 To L5

Throughout the half I would recommend keeping a job diary to track the main things that you’ve done or impact you’ve landed.

I also recommend having a 1:1 doc with key people who you work with on your team — that’s a good way to jog your memory of what you’ve worked on in collaboration with other people.
