Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 15] - Don't Ask For Too Much Permission

In this lessons, we address a common mistake, especially among junior engineers - Asking for too much permission. This often stems from a lack of confidence and a desire to avoid making decisions. Here are the core points:

- We often encounter candidates who, after discussing various options for solving a problem, defer decision-making to the interviewer

- Instead, we should make decisions ourselves. We can evaluate the options based on their trade-offs and choose the best one

- By taking ownership and driving the design, we demonstrate strong decision-making skills

- While it’s important to ask clarifying questions, we should avoid relying too heavily on the interviewer for directional guidance. Instead, we should proactively drive the conversation and make decisions that address the key issues.

Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 14] - Don't Save the Hardest for Last

In this lesson, we focus on the importance of addressing the most challenging aspects of a system design problem early on:

- We often make the mistake of delaying the hardest parts of the problem. While starting with simpler tasks might seem productive, it can lead to incorrect design choices and suggest we're unaware of the core challenges

- We should immediately focus on the most complex parts of the problem. Tackling these challenges first demonstrates our understanding and prevents us from getting sidetracked by less critical aspects

- In our interview example, we show how the candidate misses the core problem behind the messaging app, tackling the simpler pieces instead

- Effective problem solving involves working through strategies for the hardest issues, like the message-to-notification fan-out, and evaluating their pros and cons

- By focusing on the toughest problem first, we show strong judgment and prioritization skills. This approach ensures that we manage our time well and address the most critical aspects of the design effectively

Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 13] - Identifying Key Issues

In the final segment of the system design series, we focus on the importance of driving the design of your system during interviews. In this video, we cover how to identify key issues. Here's the video's core points:

- Avoid following a rigid structure. For example, don't just jump into a data model or architectural diagram without considering the unique requirements of the system you're designing, such as group messaging dynamics
- Actively ask clarifying questions to understand the requirements better. This helps in identifying and addressing key issues specific to the problem, rather than sticking to a generic approach
- Tailor your approach based on the specifics of the problem. If dealing with a unique system, like a group messaging app, adapt your design to handle unique challenges, such as managing multiple notifications from a single message
- Lead the discussion by probing into requirements and challenges. This ensures that your design addresses the most critical aspects of the problem

Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 12] - Don't Ignore New Information

In this segment, we discuss the issue of ignoring new information during system design interviews. This happens when candidates fail to adapt their designs based on additional requirements or edge cases presented by the interviewer. Here’s the core points from the video:

- If the interviewer introduces new requirements or issues, like handling scenarios with no available drivers, we must adapt our design accordingly. Ignoring these hints can lead to incomplete or impractical solutions

- Sometimes, a simpler solution might be more effective. For example, informing customers that no drivers are available and suggesting they try again later might be a better approach than complex tracking systems

- When given new information, reassess and incorporate it into the design. This flexibility is crucial for creating effective and practical solutions

Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 11] - Don't Assume the Happy Path

In this segment, we focus on a common issue often seen with more junior engineers - Only considering the happy path when designing systems. Here’s the core points from the video:

- As engineers, our goal is to design systems that work reliably even when things go wrong. A system that fails 1% of the time is often unacceptable

- We need to anticipate and design for potential issues, not just ideal scenarios

- Proactively identifying weaknesses and planning solutions demonstrates strong engineering skills and foresight

- Documenting our design and potential problems as we go helps manage complexity and ensures we address edge cases effectively

- We go through a detailed example of all this with a ride-sharing system design problem

- Candidates often create isolated components without thinking about how they connect
- We provide an example contrasting a disorganized approach with a more thoughtful one
- Our recommended approach: Trace through data flows and user perspectives
- The goal is to think like an engineer: Identify the right problems before proposing solutions
- **Our main advice:** Don't just draw random boxes, trace data flow to uncover key system challenges

Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 7] - Document As You Go

In system design interviews, it's essential to use multiple forms of communication—verbal, written, and visual. A common mistake is relying only on verbal communication, which can lead to confusion and missed opportunities to iterate on your design.

- Not writing anything down makes it difficult to follow your logic, especially when discussing complex systems. Without written or visual references, both you and the interviewer may struggle to keep track of the design.
- Documenting as you go—whether through diagrams, lists, or notes—makes it easier to iterate on and debug your design. It also frees up your mental resources to focus on solving new problems instead of remembering all the details.
- Finally, well-documented designs provide a useful reference for interviewers when they review your performance after the interview.

Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 6] - Freezing on the Spot

In system design interviews, clear communication is crucial. Many candidates struggle not because they lack knowledge, but because they fail to express their ideas effectively. This video highlights a common issue: Freezing under pressure.

- Instead of freezing when faced with a complex problem, keep the conversation going by asking clarifying questions. This not only helps you gather necessary information but also engages the interviewer.
- If unsure what to ask, focus on understanding the system’s functionality. Questions about the product’s purpose and user journey can guide your design process.
- Involving the interviewer through questions shows your experience and keeps the interview on track.

In short, don’t let nerves stop you—ask questions to maintain momentum and communicate effectively.

Top System Design Interview Mistakes [Part 5] - Don't Over or Under-Engineer a System

In system design interviews, it's crucial to strike the right balance between complexity and simplicity in your solutions. This video highlights the importance of avoiding both over-engineering and under-engineering:

- Designing systems with unnecessary complexity can lead to wasted resources, higher risks of bugs, and an impractical solution
- While caching can improve performance, indiscriminately adding caches without careful consideration can introduce inconsistencies and unnecessary complexity
- Rather than adding complexity for its own sake, stay focused on the unique challenges of the problem at hand to identify the most effective solutions
- Thoughtfully evaluate where to apply caching or other optimizations by weighing the benefits against the potential downsides
- Ensure that your design decisions are driven by the specific needs of the problem, rather than trying to impress the interviewer with buzzwords or unnecessary tools

This approach helps create efficient and practical solutions tailored to the specific challenges of the interview prompt.
