Pros
  • Learning environment in the start of your career
  • Multiple training to support your work
  • Multi-project experience with different client and industry exposure
Cons
  1. Limited exposure to consulting work if you are in technology.

  2. Large gap between consulting and technology.

  • Consulting is granted more privilege in training, mentoring, client's exposure, and industry practice.
  • Technology will be limited to implementation projects where business or commercial exposure will be very limited.
  1. Career advancement in technology is very long.
  • 6 years minimum to achieve manager for 6 grades, which each grade has their own quota. So even if you performed well, it will basically limit your career advancement if you have not been granted the quota due to a manager's preference.
  • Consulting only has 2 grades from analyst to manager, which is achievable in 3-4 years.
  1. Different training exposure between consulting and technology.
  • Technology focuses only on tools and applications (local bootcamps).
  • Consulting has problem-solving training (design thinking), storytelling, and advanced mentoring (conducted overseas).
  1. Large gap of remuneration between consulting and technology due to the wide gap of grades, not to mention no system for double promotion in technology (promote to 2 grades above at one time).

  2. You are selected into consulting or technology based on your university.

  • Public university graduates such as UI, ITB, UGM will be allocated to consulting.
  • Private university graduates such as Binus, Untar, Atma will be allocated to technology.
  • Some exceptions may be made for experienced hires, former interns, or by networking with higher management.
  1. Regarding point 6, you can switch from consulting to technology but not vice versa. Higher management will not be able to support your request to switch since it is controlled globally in a very conservative organization structure.

  2. Less initiative from the local office to change or adapt a new way to work in specific functions such as HR, Finance, and MarkComm compared with other competitors. Typically, the reasoning always comes down to being regulated by the global office.

Advice to Management
  • See the cons and try to find a solution for them.
  • Find a way for the local office function to optimize the way of work, such as:
    • HC: How to make overseas training accessible for those who cannot have the privilege. Probably by assigning those who participated to be local trainers for others.
    • Markcomm: How to gain more influence or impact on social media and position the local company in clients' eyes (typically exposure only from overseas).
