Software Engineering Interview Experience

Process

The interviewers were very friendly and helpful when answering questions.

I believe the types of technical questions I was asked were relatively reflective of the kind of work I would have been doing at Airbnb.

I typically prefer having a working solution that isn't necessarily optimal to a theoretically optimal solution that you have no time to code.

Questions

You are given a 3x3 board for a tile puzzle. It contains 8 tiles numbered 1 to 8, and an empty spot.

You can move any tile adjacent to the empty spot into that spot. This action creates an empty spot where the tile originally was.

The goal is to find a series of moves that will solve the board, resulting in the following configuration:

[ [1, 2, 3], [4, 5, 6], [7, 8, - ] ]

where '-' represents the empty tile.
