Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - Sydney, Australia

Process

DO NOT APPLY, ONLY HackerRank developers required!

They will send you just a test task on HackerRank.

e.g., BUY-SELL Order matching machine.

And this is not just a 45-minute task; it's 3 days, to be more precise. Hmm, just wondering where the person who has a daily job and family with kids would get those 3 days.

And certainly, the tasks are not what is difficult, but rather developing and debugging in HackerRank with their hidden test cases.

I am completely new to HackerRank, so I used my IDE, of course, and pasted the code there. Again, why on earth must a person get used to a new tool just for the sake of a test task? Yeah, I forgot; coding in a real IDE must be a red flag in the hiring process :)

And apparently, some test cases are so stupid that if you have a "new line" after your output to make things look nicer, the test fails, and of course, this is a hidden test case. Oh, I think I know what it is about: the candidate needs to be proficient in identifying edge cases. Sure.

I don't know. I personally wasted 2 nights on this test task as I simply don't have daytime to do this. I passed 23 out of 24 tests (or 21/22, I don't remember) and submitted as I physically could not spend another night without good sleep. And of course, I was rewarded with fantastically detailed feedback, e.g., "Thanks for your application, we think there is no job for your talents here, please read about us on Glassdoor."

Hmm, I actually read about other experiences with your interview process, and they are mostly negative, so I'm not sure what you meant.

I think they must be liable by law to pay for time spent.

Summary: The hiring process is apparently for students who have a lot of time and, no matter what, want to get it, who would spend days and nights doing stupid tests, sacrificing their daily job and family commitments, and of course, for those who have mastered their HackerRank experience. Your knowledge and experience are not important here (read other feedbacks here on Glassdoor; they are relatively the same).

I have actually seen this movie before: the company is so cool and everyone is trying to make you think they are so cool and smart during the hiring process, and when you finally get it and open the real production source code base, you want to ask everyone, "Hey guys, where are all of those cool ideas we were talking about during the process..."
