I received a call from their talent team regarding a new job opportunity. I was told the position was for a software engineer. I explained that I am an embedded software engineer and would not be considering a role purely focused on cloud development.
However, they stated that Amazon no longer has specific roles. Instead, candidates apply for a "software role," and if accepted, the best position is found for them afterward.
I reluctantly agreed, but that's when everything went downhill. The assigned interviewer worked in AWS backend and had no understanding of embedded development. All questions were generic, pure software-focused, concerning situations rarely encountered in embedded software development (e.g., dictionary/hash table manipulation). The interviewer was unfamiliar with C/C++, which is used almost 99% of the time in the embedded industry.
There was a complete lack of focus during the interview, all due to this peculiar process of hiring "generic software developers" and then assigning them to different roles post-interview.
