Amazon Work Experiences

Your experience depends entirely on your team

Software Development Engineer • Former Employee

Seattle, Washington, United States

August 27, 2019

Pros: Amazon can be a great place to work. Employees are generally empowered to take full ownership of problems and drive solutions entirely. This means that you can have an outsized impact relatively early on. If senior management is on your side, you'll be able to push your vision forward and change the world in a meaningful way.

Cons: The primary drawbacks are that the hours are long, and if you have a bad manager, your life will be miserable. In many respects, this isn't all that different from most companies, but you'll feel it more acutely at Amazon. Also, if you work on an unsexy, unglamorous team, your best bet is to switch teams.

Pros: 1. You will have a steep learning curve, with something new always around the corner. 2. You will get to work with some very smart people. 3. Decent salaries.

Cons: 1. Work-life balance is pretty much screwed up. 2. No additional perks (frugality). 3. Sometimes management is not very transparent. 4. Things can change very fast, and there is a lot of randomization.

Managers only care about themselves and will toss you aside to further their careers

Software Development Engineer • Former Employee

San Francisco, California, United States

Pros: It will make you a better engineer, just because you'll be working with other great engineers.

Cons: Managers are too focused on their own promotions and have too much power to be effective. They will work you until you burn out so they can show off your achievements as their own, then PIP you for being below whatever standard they feel like.
