Pros
  1. Learn how to value customers and build products by starting with the customer.
  2. Reasonable pay, but not competitive.
  3. Flexible timings.
Cons

I have a large list of negatives:

  1. Management treats employees as junk; they are just resources. Whenever employees leave, management doesn't try to retain them, as they can always find someone from India to work on their projects.
  2. The projects don't require advanced CS knowledge; they can easily train others to do that work.
  3. On-call burden. It's very bad for an engineer to wake up in the middle of the night and work on tickets.
  4. No career growth. I don't know where I will go after three to four years.
  5. Promotions are given once every four years.
  6. Many managers micromanage.
  7. Compromised hiring bar. I've seen instances where they hire people who don't know how to code properly. This is because managers want to project their growth by completing projects on time, by compromising the hiring bar.
  8. Frugality at its peak.
  9. Cramped workspaces. These days, Amazon offices resemble trading companies.
  10. No perks or benefits.
  11. No creative projects. All projects are started and coded in Seattle, then transferred to India for maintenance and adding small features.
  12. People work here only to get the brand name.
  13. No work-life balance.
  14. No team outings.
  15. SDEs rarely get transferred to Seattle.
  16. In India, Amazon has lost its significance. Join Amazon if you want money.
  17. Any hike given will be consumed by increased income tax, so there's almost no hike.
Advice to Management

Please give some creative projects to people. Don't hire SDEs for fixing bugs. You can hire nice support engineers with less pay. Try to understand the meaning of frugality and don't show frugality on necessary things. Stop hiring managers coming from services companies like Infosys, TCS, etc. Hire software development managers who actually did some coding. Treat employees with respect. Please try to explore other career options if SDEs are trying to leave the company. Good people are essential for the company.
