Career growth paths for individual contributors are quite limited. Amazon does not reward tenure and minimizes benefits, with the argument being 'look at the stock price'. External hires get the best incentives to join, usually at the top salary band. Refreshers are rare and hard to get, conditional on high performance, unlike in other tech companies where most people get them.
