Challenging and interesting work, but few "soft" benefits
Note, experiences at Amazon vary a lot depending on the team you're in. I've worked for the Relational Database Service team for 2+ years.
- Gained experience building a service that manages hundreds of thousands of database instances (lots of challenges at "Amazon scale").
- Gained experience working with other AWS services.
- Opportunities to get your hands dirty on low-level database engine code.
- Medium operational burden.
- No hard deadlines; the focus is always on building a quality product.
The usual; stingy on perks. For example, far from free food, sometimes there are no decent food options.
Social/team activities are rare. But again, some teams/locations are better at this than others.
