Process

  1. I was contacted by a recruiter for this position. I had an initial conversation with the recruiter by phone.

  2. An interview coordinator emailed me regarding the technical interview, which was conducted by phone.

  3. I went through the technical interview, and the interviewer stated on the spot that he would recommend me for further rounds.

  4. I was then called for an onsite interview in Phoenix, AZ.

  5. The recruiter mentioned there might be one or two rounds, depending on the interview panel. Later, I understood that a second round would be conducted based on performance in the first round. If the first round did not go well, they might skip the second round.

  6. They sent me flight tickets and made arrangements for my travel from the airport to the AMEX campus.

  7. I arrived at the campus on time, and the interviewers also arrived on time.

  8. First Round: Cognitive Skills Two interviewers conducted this round. They presented two questions:

    • The first was an open-ended question designed to test my thinking capability. My thought process was more important than the result.
    • The second was a project problem that required a solution. I was expected to ask questions to understand their system and then approach a solution. I believe I performed very well in this round.
  9. Second Round: Behavioral & Resume Walkthrough Two different interviewers conducted this round after the first two left. This round proceeded based on my performance in the first round. They asked many questions about various situations. I observed that they asked standard, expected behavioral questions in a twisted manner. The questions might have sounded new, but they were all variations of common expectations. I believe I also performed well in this interview. They informed me that I would receive the results within 3-4 working days.

I received an email from AMEX in 4 days stating that I was not selected for this position. I thought I had performed well in all interview rounds, but perhaps I was missing something they were specifically looking for in this role. It's difficult to guess the reason for rejection when you believe you performed well.

Questions

Behavioural Round:

It is really difficult to guess whether you performed well in this round, as your answers might be interpreted in different ways by different interviewers. There are no perfect answers. Do your best and leave the rest to your luck.
