I can talk about my interview experience with Apple for the role of Infrastructure/DevOps Engineer.
I first received a Coderpad link to complete, which was a technical assessment revolving around basics of DevOps like Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, Linux, Python scripting, and Ansible.
Most of the questions were multiple-choice with three scripting questions.
I received feedback for the assessment via email, and they scheduled the first round of the technical interview on email as well.
There were no phone calls from any recruiters for this stage.
The technical interview started with the interviewer being straightforward and asking for my introduction. There was no need to explain what was expected from this interview or for him to introduce himself.
He then proceeded to open the CoderPad shell and asked me to code two programs of easy difficulty. However, he was very adamant about writing correct syntaxes. I personally didn’t understand the need to not learn syntaxes in this ever-evolving world and time of AI and GPT tools, but that’s okay.
After that, the interviewer focused on Linux fundamentals, asking for commands such as the exact command for memory checking and disk partitioning.
Next, he focused on GitHub commands and wanted pinpoint answers for everything without any discussion, which was awful. Then, he focused on Kubernetes and Docker, and kept playing question-answer instead of having real discussions around the tech side. I could see the interviewer's disappointment when I didn’t know answers or syntaxes, which tells me about the company culture.
Fortunately, I have my job and there’s no dire need to work alongside such individuals, because it would be a nightmare.
All in all, it felt like I was interviewing for a Linux Administrator role in 2015. The interviewer had a laid-back approach at the time. There were no questions on CI/CD, AWS infrastructure, or Terraform, which are my main skillsets.
Still, I’m glad to have had the chance to appear for the interview. However, it would have been more fruitful if there had been discussions and if I had learned something from this time.
