Pros
  • Super interesting industry.
  • Work on a product that is the single most important piece of the chip manufacturing process and therefore one of the most important technologies of our time.
  • Nice workplace and people.
  • A lot of holidays.
Cons
  • The software process is clunky and outdated, which leads to a lot of lost time and frustration.

  • There's a humongous amount of technical debt in the codebase with little care for good software engineering practices.

  • Old language versions, old compilers, and old tools in general. It's not just a matter of the age of the technology itself; newer tools bring many features that make engineers more productive.

  • Compensation is not great in general. It's bad in comparison with top tech companies. And when you factor in the Dutch government's hunger for your hard-earned money, it gets even worse.

Advice to Management

Please give more attention to the software process, tools, and practices. You're going to lose a lot of good, talented engineers if you keep relegating software to the back of the line.
