Pros

AT&T has undertaken an aggressive program to train IT employees across a broad range of technologies, and has a big focus on facilitating personal growth. In the right areas of the company, opportunities to do something new are rich.

Pay is competitive, bonuses are strong, benefits are a full suite. Flexible working arrangements can be made.

Cons

So much is dependent on the particular organization.

Some management is much more on board with developing their employees than others.

In many areas, there is a very strong delivery focus, at the expense of some of the better things at AT&T.

Change is hard, and AT&T is making big changes in the IT department.

Health care continues to degrade year over year, but is competitive across the industry.

A shift to location-centric workgroups has started to put a shadow of doubt on telecommuting, even though the company officially encourages it.

Advice to Management

Recognize empire building. Recognize being "managed up" to. Continue to invest in people. Continue to make flexible arrangements for employees; it's a win-win when this happens.
