Senior Java Developer Interview Experience - Sydney, Australia

Process

After a few days, I received an invitation for a first interview via Skype.

The interviewer was very friendly and asked mainly about my current job and what I do there. They also spoke about Atlassian and encouraged me to ask any questions about the company. The conversation was very warm.

A week later, I was scheduled for an online test. Fifteen minutes before the interview, I received an email with a sample of an event system. I was asked to import the code into my favorite IDE. After the interview started, I shared my IDE window via Skype screen sharing and, while talking with the interviewer, implemented the tasks they described.

In general, the event system contained a few classes:

  • Event
  • EventListener
  • EventManager

It was TDD: I was asked to write a test for some missing functionality in EventManager, and after that, I had to write the implementation.

In essence, you create an EventListener for some event, register it with EventManager, and EventManager fires this event. You then check if the listener was called.

Overall, the system was simple, but it was written in a way that confused me. For example, HashMap did not use generics. The combination of unfamiliar code and some stress caused me to fail.

Questions

All questions were easy; nothing was difficult.

The main goal is to understand the full hierarchy of classes and how Events, Listeners, and the EventManager work together.
