I was initially contacted by an internal recruiter.
Recruiters provide many resources prior to interviews. Unfortunately, it is against company policy to give feedback in written form.
There were 5 stages:
I found all the interviews fairly easy. The code questions didn't seem too hard; both questions appeared straightforward.
Since you can use any language for these questions, use what you are strongest in, not what would be easier. Definitely have a testing framework ready. Also, be wary: if you choose a language that is not widely used at Atlassian, your interviewer may not know it.
The reason I say to go with your strongest language is that if you are coming in at a higher level, the expectation is greater. You will be penalized more heavily for simple syntax mistakes, which will ultimately hurt your final decision.
I feel like they really find any excuse when interviewing you at a higher level to move you down levels. For instance, when I received an offer, they offered one level lower because of the feedback in prior rounds.
In the manager interview, I didn't show enough "working as a team experience/skills," even though I have 7+ years of experience working in teams as a software engineer.
There seems to be no room for implied experience and skill in the interview. Therefore, in your answers for the behavioral interview, I think you'll benefit from touching on as many different soft skills as you can per answer. Hopefully, doing that will address some of their hidden questions and criteria, as it looks like they don't explicitly ask for everything they want to know.
For anyone reading this who is about to start this interview process, just remember: your success in the interview doesn't define you or your skills as a software engineer.
It is purely the opinion of those who interviewed you, which can vary wildly, as no person could accurately assess you in 45 minutes. Your experience will heavily depend on your interviewer. I feel if I had a different Code design interviewer, it would have worked out a lot better for myself.
