Process

I submitted my application online via their website.

The next day, I was sent a 90-minute HackerRank test.

The HackerRank test contained 5 questions, though it wasn't expected that I answer them all. They scaled from Easy to Hard, ranging from a simple Roman numeral to integer converter to a full graph traversal, including parsing a visual representation of a 2D graph.

I answered the first two questions with 100% accuracy. For the next two, I provided simple, inefficient solutions that passed small test cases but not larger ones.

Following the HackerRank test, I had a 30-minute HR interview where I was asked personality and experience questions, but nothing technical. The questions focused on company values, my motivation for working there, and my past software experience.

After passing the HR interview, we booked three 45-minute interviews back-to-back via video chat, as I am not from Sydney.

The three interviews focused on:

  • Describing and walking through a project I had worked on. No code was required; this was the most open-ended interview, focusing on technical decisions, interesting problems and solutions, and a lot on teamwork (as my project was a team project). Questions covered agile methodologies, merge processes, documentation, and testing.
  • A coding question via screen share. I was given Java, which is typical but may differ depending on whether the role is front-end or back-end. I used an IDE, and was given a project to download with some test cases and a basic framework. I then had to solve a programming question that wasn't too difficult but was atypical, as I was restricted from using any imports, making even built-in data structures like Lists and Sets unavailable. This required me to implement one of these from scratch using standard Java arrays.
  • A series of 10-15 technical questions. Each was much more specific and either right or wrong, such as "What's the difference between a list, set, and map?" or "If I visit a web page, describe everything that happens between hitting Enter in my address bar and the page loading."

After these three interviews, it took about two days to hear back with a successful offer.

Questions

If I visit google.com, describe everything that happens between hitting Enter in my address bar and the page loading.

What's the difference between a list, set, and map?

If you could go back and make one major change to your project, what would it be?

Was this helpful?
