I applied in March 2017 and received a rejection after a lengthy interview process exceeding three months.
The entire process took place via a private Slack channel, with a single point of contact.
The first round of interviews focused on front-end JavaScript questions and client-server security.
From the initial contact with Automattic to this first round was one week.
I received notification of passing this round two weeks after that initial conversation, during which I was granted access to an SVN repository for a plugin development test.
I was given one week to complete this test, which involved transforming a poorly written plugin into one ready for submission on an "official" WordPress level.
After three weeks, I heard back from Automattic with comments on areas needing further work, all of which were PHP-based.
There were no comments on any JavaScript or CSS work during this process, which I assume was a positive sign.
After another three weeks of silence from Automattic, I finally received more questions regarding the process and code work for the plugin.
After answering those questions and refining the PHP code further, I had one final conversation with the interviewer. This occurred four weeks after our last contact, despite multiple attempts to communicate.
I received a rejection letter one week after the final review of my code.
