The interview process is just as described on the Automattic site and confirmed by other reviews:
First, an interview with a Recruiter (or applying directly), followed by a review of your application. You'll then fill out two forms with questions about your experience, and finally, complete coding tests. I failed at this point.
The coding test for the Front End Engineer role is very long and assumes you are already familiar with WordPress conventions, especially with WP plugin development.
They invite you to a GitHub repository where you must review a Pull Request (PR) and provide feedback, answer issues related to WP security, and complete tasks to improve the code.
In theory, you should be able to finish this in 6 hours. However, it's impossible to do so in that timeframe if you are not already familiar with WP plugin development.
If you are already familiar with WP plugins, you might be able to complete it in 6 hours. But if you are not, you will spend a lot of time researching how things are supposed to be done in WordPress.
I was rejected because my security audit of a WP plugin was good, but not good enough. I missed one point that only occurs when installing the plugin on multiple sites (something possibly trivial if you are accustomed to developing WP plugins, but not if you work with other platforms).
They should add a disclaimer: apply only if you are a WP developer or if you are willing to spend days learning about WP plugin development and potentially face rejection in the end.
