Pros

Senior developers value your personal growth and encourage you to attend workshops and training. My manager even let me read textbooks at work (free online via techbus.safaribooksonline.com), as long as I still got my work done.

Cons

Political friction between business and tech, and turf wars between individual tech teams. As a junior dev, I was spared from this.

Bizarre internal software development tools. Don't expect any technology you learn here to be transferable. Focus on learning to write clean, clear code.

Advice to Management

Project leads are so scared of their project not appearing to move forward that they trudge along with severe architectural problems. Enforce that all project plans have a "Pilot version" phase, so that the devs get a politically-free chance to re-architect the project.
