Process
I had a great experience interviewing with Square, from the moment a recruiter reached out to me to the time that a decision was made on my offer.
Square's process:
- HR Screen
- Technical phone screen -- usually there are two, but I did well enough on the first one that I moved straight to onsite.
- Onsite -- a full day schedule, with 3 technical pair programming sessions, one system design, and one chat with the hiring manager.
- Offer and potential team matching -- Square interviews you as a generalist, and team matching happens sometimes during or after the onsite.
In the end, I had a great experience every step of the way and was extended a very competitive package. Pay is high if your interview performance is good. I ended up turning down the offer, but it was a very hard decision to do so.

Pros: Square is growing tremendously as a team and a company. It's an exciting, dynamic place to work with tons of interesting problems to solve.
The people are top-notch, and it's impossible not to learn while working with such talented people across many disciplines.
The culture is super open, transparent, and collaborative. It's really easy to reach across what would at other companies be barriers to get things done.
The food is also amazing, which doesn't hurt!
Cons: The fast growth and dynamism can sometimes feel like churn. There's so much going on; it's sometimes hard to keep track of all the projects that are being worked on.
