Software Engineering Intern Interview Experience - San Francisco, California
Process
Applied with resume through the campus jobs website. Met with an on-campus recruiter for a short technical interview where we worked through one problem. I was invited to their HQ in San Francisco, where we spent the whole day learning about the company, completing 3-4 30-minute, pair-programming assignments, and enjoying an awesome free lunch. I wasn't well prepared, and this was my first round of technical interviews, so I wasn't surprised when I heard back several days later via email that I didn't get an offer.
Questions
Figure out the day of the week of the Unix epoch using only the knowledge of today's date. (This is the only question I remember, not the hardest.)

Design docs are used everywhere. Everyone is very friendly and invested in Square's future. It felt like a really healthy culture for a growing company that's already been through the transition from a startup to a company of over 1000 people. Really interesting, impactful work is happening across the company, with room to grow and move around. For interns, there are several events, a trip to Yosemite, assigned mentors and managers, and sessions to learn about projects and work happening across the company.Cons: Interns and full-timers are expected to accept slightly lower compensation than what's competitive on the market. The silver lining to this is that the people who work there intentionally chose Square over a bigger company and are especially passionate about the vision and culture.
