Financial Software Developer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

I applied online and received an email from a recruiter to schedule a phone interview.

The telephonic interview was not very difficult. It covered basic C and C++ concepts such as:

  • The difference between struct, union, and class
  • malloc vs. new
  • What malloc returns when it cannot allocate memory

About a week later, I was invited to their NYC office for an onsite interview. Bloomberg hosts interview days, with approximately 18-25 candidates interviewed on each of these days. My interview panel consisted of three members: one was a shadow interviewer, and the other two were conducting the actual interview.

The interview was not overly challenging. I had a coding question on string reversal and another on data structures. It is crucial to know which data structure to use in various situations, along with the time complexities of each operation. Without this knowledge, your chances of answering such questions are slim.

My final question was the most difficult, requiring a solution that combined databases and multithreading. The interviewer seemed to have memorized this question. When I asked for further clarification, she repeated herself. Eventually, the other interviewer intervened, reinterpreted the question, confirmed his understanding with his colleague, and then explained it to me again.

Overall, it was a very negative experience. The culture did not seem very positive, which was evident from the interviewers' attitudes. One of my interviewers was constantly texting on his cellphone while I was given the opportunity to ask questions. This was quite rude.

Warning: Research the company culture by speaking with someone inside before accepting an offer.
